⚡ The Short Version

AI search is now the default, not the future

As of early 2026, roughly half of all U.S. Google searches show an AI Overview, ChatGPT serves 900 million weekly users, and AI search referral traffic has grown 527% year over year. The catch: the brands ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI all recommend overlap less than 15% with each other. Visibility is no longer one race. It’s five. Below are 30+ sourced data points on where AI search actually stands, and what each one means for your business.

Google AI Overviews statistics

AI Overviews have gone from an experiment to the default search experience for about half of U.S. queries in roughly 15 months. They sit above the traditional results, answer the question directly, and decide which sources get seen before anyone scrolls.

  • AI Overviews appear on roughly 50% of U.S. Google searches as of early 2026 — Google’s own framing is “roughly half.” (Google official disclosure; BrightEdge measured 48% in March 2026, a 58% year-over-year jump.)
  • That is up from just 6.49% of queries in January 2025 — close to an 8x expansion in a little over a year. (Semrush, 10M+ keywords.)
  • When an AI Overview is present, users click a traditional result only 8% of the time, versus 15% without one — nearly half the click rate. (Pew Research Center, 68,879 real searches.)
  • One longitudinal study found organic click-through rate on AI Overview queries fell from 1.76% to 0.61% before recovering to about 2.4% by February 2026. (Seer Interactive, 2.43B impressions across 53 brands.)
  • Around 58% of Google searches now end with no click at all. (Semrush.)
  • Brands that get cited inside an AI Overview earn roughly 120% more organic clicks per impression than uncited brands on the same query. (Seer Interactive, 2026.)

💡 What this means for you

Ranking #1 no longer guarantees the click. The win condition has shifted from “rank” to “get cited.” If your page is the source the AI summarizes, you keep visibility even when the user never scrolls — and you pull more clicks than the competitors who aren’t cited.

Where AI Overviews show up most (and least)

  • Coverage is highest in Healthcare (~88%), Education (~83%), and B2B Tech (~82%). Education climbed from 18% to 83% in a single year. (BrightEdge, 9-industry tracker.)
  • E-commerce and transactional queries stay low (~4–14%) — Google protects shopping intent where it makes ad revenue. (BrightEdge / Semrush.)
  • Local searches rarely trigger an AI Overview — only about 7% of local-intent queries. (Pew / industry analysis.)
  • Long and question-style queries are AI Overview territory: searches of 10+ words are about 7x more likely to trigger one, and roughly 60% of question queries do. (Pew Research Center.)

AI search beyond Google: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini & Claude

Google’s AI Overviews are only one surface. A second discovery layer now runs entirely outside Google, and it is growing faster than anything in recent search history. The platforms also barely agree with each other on which brands to recommend.

  • ChatGPT reached 900 million weekly users by February 2026, up from 400 million a year earlier. (OpenAI.)
  • AI platforms generated about 1.13 billion referral visits in a single month (June 2025), up 357% year over year; broader analyses put AI search traffic growth at 527% YoY. (Similarweb; Search Engine Land.)
  • The market is fragmenting fast: ChatGPT’s share of AI referral traffic fell from about 89% to 63% in roughly eight months as Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity grew. (Goodie, brand-panel study.)
  • The platforms recommend almost entirely different sources. Only about 11% of domains are cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity, and cross-platform overlap with Google’s top 10 sits near 12%. (Averi, 680M citations; Ahrefs.)
  • AI-referred visitors convert. ChatGPT referrals convert at roughly 7.1% in one panel — second only to paid search — and several studies put AI-referred conversion at multiples of traditional organic. (Similarweb; varies by vertical.)
  • AI crawlers are now hungrier than Google’s. LLM bots crawl roughly 3.6x more than Googlebot, yet many sites accidentally block them after Cloudflare began blocking AI crawlers by default. (Cloudflare Radar / industry analysis.)

✅ From our own data

Across the GEO campaigns we have run, AI Warhorse client pages earned their first AI Overview or ChatGPT citation within an average of 30-60 days, and saw 50% more AI-referred sessions within 3-6 months. we are seeing more leads each month come in from Call Rail with Google dominating the lead flow still in 2026

⚠️ Read the numbers honestly

AI Overview “prevalence” is reported anywhere from 25% to 60% depending on the keyword sample and method — Conductor measured ~25%, BrightEdge ~48%, Xponent21 ~60%. There is no single correct figure. Treat coverage as a range, and calibrate to your own vertical before you set strategy. Anyone quoting one exact percentage as gospel is overselling it.

The business case for GEO in 2026

Adoption is no longer a forward-looking metric. Buyers, budgets, and behavior have already moved, and the companies treating AI visibility as a real channel are pulling ahead of the ones still measuring rankings alone.

  • 72% of companies worldwide now use AI in at least one business function. (McKinsey.)
  • Nearly 40% of decision-makers now budget specifically for AI search optimization, and over 25% are planning content built for AI citations. (2026 State of AI Search reporting.)
  • Gartner projects traditional search volume will decline about 25% by 2026 as AI chatbots absorb informational queries. (Gartner.)
  • Generational behavior is already there: Gen Z and Millennials exceed 70% AI-search usage. (Industry analysis.)
  • Brands investing in GEO report 30–40% higher AI referral traffic than SEO-only competitors. (upGrowth.)
  • During the 2025 holiday season, AI-driven referral traffic to U.S. retail sites surged 693% year over year, and AI referrals converted about 31% better than non-AI traffic. (Adobe Digital Insights.)

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between SEO and GEO?

SEO optimizes a page to rank in traditional search results. GEO — Generative Engine Optimization — optimizes content to be cited inside AI answers like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini. They overlap, but a page can rank #1 on Google and still be invisible in AI answers, which is why both matter in 2026.

What percentage of Google searches show an AI Overview?

Estimates range from about 25% to 60% depending on the study and keyword sample. Google describes it as “roughly half” of U.S. queries as of early 2026. Coverage is far higher for health, education, and informational queries, and much lower for local and transactional searches.

Does ranking on Google still matter for AI search?

Yes. Strong organic rankings remain the foundation for getting cited — classic search rank is one of the strongest predictors of AI citation. But it is no longer sufficient on its own, because ChatGPT and Perplexity pull from a source pool that overlaps Google’s top results by only around 12%.

How do I get my business cited by ChatGPT and AI Overviews?

Answer questions directly and early on the page, use clear headings and structured data, keep your facts and pricing in crawlable HTML rather than scripts or images, and make sure your robots.txt allows GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot, and Google-Extended. Earning relevant citations and links from trusted sources accelerates it.

Is AI search worth it for a local or home-services business?

It depends on your mix. AI Overviews appear on only about 7% of local searches, so traditional local SEO still drives most local leads. But ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity increasingly recommend service providers by name, and being the cited option there is a growing source of high-intent leads. The right answer is calibration, not all-in or ignore.
